Location Overview

Set amongst the mountains of Iwate Prefecture, Harrow International's first school in Japan is unique in Asia - a place where world-class education combines with stunning Japanese nature. Situated in the stunning environment of Appi Kogen, the school benefits from direct access to nature: pollution-free air, star filled nights, and a clean healthy environment. The biggest ski resort in Japan, a 36-hole golf course, and 18 tennis courts are all readily available for student/staff access.

Role and Requirements

PURPOSE OF JOB:

  • To have oversight of cohort progress in all areas - academic, pastoral, and wellbeing.
  • To coordinate data led interventions and mentoring
  • To support in the leading of high expectations across the day-school and the systems in place to up-hold all student standards, and assist in implementing these.
  • The Phase Leader role is a teaching role so applicants should be a teacher qualified to teach in and experienced with the English National Curriculum.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regularly review and triangulate data and use this data to identify intervention needs and use for strategic planning at a cohort and individual level.
  • Communication with HODs, HMs, and tutors regarding intervention needs and identifying key case workers.
  • Regular meetings with the pastoral committee.
  • Coordinating academic interventions and pastoral mentorship.
  • Be part of a team (Including SENDCO) who write and update IEPs.
  • To oversee and be present at learning review weeks.
  • To develop transition programmes and support with transition of students to and from different phases.
  • Lead year group trips.
  • Communicate to tutors regarding diploma process.
  • Communicate with staff regarding high profile students regarding academic and pastoral issues and interventions.
  • Deliver phase assemblies.
  • To be a key step in the escalation of behaviour issues in each phase.
  • To be part of the On Call team.
  • Ensure evening prep is carried out smoothly and effectively (but not required be present every evening at prep).
  • Oversight of tutors and the close personal tutoring system.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Personable, empathetic and approachable; a strong desire to work with young adults and develop them as well-rounded individuals.
  • A desire to drive up standards.
  • A strong background in pastoral care and leadership is desired.
  • Excellent communication skills, adaptability, resilience, excellent interpersonal communication and coordination ability.
  • Strong adaptability, able to work under pressure, sense of responsibility and professionalism.
  • Recognised education degree or degree and teaching certificate
  • Familiarity with UK curriculum and IGCSE/GCSE/A levels
  • Consistent experience within a highly regarded school environment
  • Experience of developing highly able students to top class results
  • Previous experience in a boarding/independent school environment is desirable
  • Commitment to boarding (you will have boarding responsibilities on appointed evenings/weekends) and to holistic, values based education
  • A full commitment to the digital culture of the school
  • A flexible and adaptable attitude is vital in joining a founding school environment

Package: The remuneration package is very generous and includes the following;
