Head of English Department, Bishkek Kyrgyzstan August 2025

Are you a passionate and dedicated English educator with a vision for leading a thriving department? Teachanywhere is seeking an experienced and inspiring Head of English Department to join a prestigious International School in Kyrgyzstan!

A non-profit community school providing excellent international education in a safe, supportive, and happy environment. The schools commitment to academic excellence is reflected in it's accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), an IB World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme, IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)and Cambridge International School, offering the Cambridge IGCSE programme in Grades 9-10. We currently have over 400 students from age 2 to 18, representing a diverse community of both international and Kyrgyz students.

The city also has a thriving expat community, making it an ideal location for those seeking a new and exciting adventure.

Responsibilities:

Head of English Department (6 TPE - Teaching Period Equivalent)

  • Promote and develop English learning in the school at all grade levels.

  • Oversee professional standards and behavior of departmental staff.

  • Conduct staff appraisals, provide mentoring, and offer support to teachers in the department.

  • Ensure coherence of teaching approaches and curriculum used in the subject areas.

  • Coordinate, as required, between teachers in the department subject areas.

  • Review department resource needs and timely presentation of needs to the High School Principal.

  • Carefully manage any delegated budget for the Department.

  • Ensure the maintenance, safety, and safe use of equipment used in the Department.

Teaching

  • Develop, deliver, and assess English language and Literature teaching in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in Grade 6-8 and/or Cambridge IGCSE in Grade 9-10 and/or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Grade 11-12 for English A or English B (as required, according to student needs and teacher allocations).

  • Develop, deliver, and assess English Language Acquisition programmes for Middle and High School students (as required according to student needs and teacher allocations).

  • Align classroom learning and teaching to programme approaches and grade-level requirements.

  • Create an engaging classroom environment that motivates students to learn and ensure all student expectations are high.

  • Use a wide range of assessment methods to ensure student knowledge and understanding are appropriately recorded.

  • Provide a positive learning environment for each student and inspire students to expand their understanding and enjoyment of the subjects taught.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of each student to be socially and academically successful, having regard to the abilities and aptitudes of individuals.

  • Provide individual tutoring for students who need support to progress in their course (as required, according to student needs and teacher allocations).

  • Collaborate with other teachers to ensure a consistent approach to learning and achievement of standards for each group.

  • Be an exemplary teacher, clearly demonstrating effective planning, teaching, and organization, and high standards of achievement and behavior in lessons.

  • Enhance lessons through incorporating technology into the teaching program and be creative in working with limited resources.

  • Work with Programme Coordinators to produce relevant planning documents and attend relevant Programme meetings.

  • Plan, keep, and report appropriate records to school management and parents.

Other Responsibilities

  • Supervise Extended Essay Students for the IB Diploma (as required, according to student needs and teacher allocations).

  • Supervise relevant Community Service and CAS projects for High School students (as required, according to student needs and teacher allocations).

  • Organize and lead extra-curricular activities and student engagement to promote positive interactions among students of all ages and develop their academic, creative, and sporting potential.

General

  • Maintain knowledge of current educational theory and practice and undertake professional training in liaison with the Head of School and Programme Coordinators.

  • Act in accordance with the budgets, policies, procedures, directions, and decisions of the school management.

  • Act as an ambassador for the school and act in a manner that upholds the values and ethos of the school at all times.

  • Maintain high-quality standards in all areas of the school.

  • Any other activities as agreed with management to contribute to the overall development of the school.

Reporting

  • Report to the Head of School.

  • Work closely with the Programme Coordinators for MYP, IGCSE, and DP.

Timing & Duration

  • The position is available starting Wednesday 13 August 2025.

  • This is a full-time, long-term position with an initial contract of 2 or 3 years (subject to 3 months' probation) which will be renewable by mutual consent.

Requirements

  • University Degree in English Language & Literature or similar.

  • Experience teaching middle and high school students.

  • Genuine enjoyment of working with students and ability to enable a wide range of students to reach their academic potential.

  • Ability to plan strategically, to set and meet deadlines, and to implement plans.

  • Capable of developing new educational programmes.

  • Excellent interpersonal, team leadership, and membership skills.

  • Able to communicate well with students, staff, and parents and gain their confidence and respect.

  • A commitment to Professional Development.

  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Desirables

  • Experience teaching in the IB Middle Years Programme, Cambridge IGCSE, and IB Diploma.

  • Additional language skills.

  • Prior teaching experience in an international environment.

  • be able to pass police checks and background checks including references

  • be a proficient English speaker

  • possess good classroom management skills

  • be a citizen of the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the USA or Canada (to meet visa requirements)
